Meet Leonard Mudachi, the founder and operator of Branded Restaurants & Retail Africa Ltd (BRRAL), a hospitality and restaurant professional with a passion for developing local and regional brands to international standards while maintaining strong local relevance.
MANAGING RESTAURANT & RETAIL OPERATIONS
Leonard’s career in hospitality management began in 1998 as a F&B Management Trainee with Hyatt Hotels in the USA, before returning to Kenya to work with hotels and restaurants in various stages of growth and development. He has extensive experience managing restaurants of all types, from fine dining at the 5-star Sarova Stanley hotel, to high-traffic locations such as the famous Simba Saloon restaurant at Carnivore, where he served as Deputy General Manager, overseeing events of up to 18,000 people. He also has experience in quick service restaurants, having served as Chief Operating Officer for Java House, managing 45 branches and three brands in Kenya and Uganda.
EXECUTING RESTAURANT EXPANSION PROJECTS
In 2014 Leonard was the Business development manager with Java House which was undertaking an expansion project. He was charged with identifying and negotiating terms for locations, overseeing branch set-up (hardware and software), branding and co-branding projects and evaluating franchising opportunities.
A RESTAURANT & RETAIL ENTREPRENEUR
Leonard is an entrepreneur, having founded Blanco’s, which established Kenya’s first exclusive tea house in Nairobi CBD and a premier sports viewing, bar, and grill at Galleria Mall. He has worked with institutional investors to identify, evaluate, and execute potential investment and expansion opportunities in Kenya.
Leonard holds a Higher Diploma in Hotel Management from the International College of Hospitality Administration (ICHA) in Brig, Switzerland, and a BA in Hotel and Restaurant Management from WashingtonState University in Pullman, Washington.
He is currently an adjunct faculty member at Strathmore University – School of Hospitality & Tourism, where he is the lead facilitator and co-creator of the Hospitality Investment Leadership Programme, a 4-day executive education programme for existing and prospective hospitality investors in the East & Central Africa region.
